RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
++BEGINS AND ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
ASSOCIATED PRESS
Washington – 11 September 2024
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Groves, The Associated Press:
“How do you think the debate went overall last night?”
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. John Thune, (R) South Dakota:
“You know, I don't know that the debates change a lot. I thought that, you know, I feel like in many ways, you know, there's a lot of discussion about the moderators and them fact checking Trump and not fact checking Harris. And clearly, if you look at it, it was the weight preponderance of the weight was on on that side of the equation. I do think that she in some ways gets has gotten by without having to defend her record and that's going to that, you know, she's going to have to do that at some point. And I think, you know, President Trump's in the best position to do it, to force her into having to defend her record on the border and on inflation and and a lot of other issues on which she has flip flopped in the last few years, because now she realizes many of her positions were far left to where the electorate is and they're not popular. So, I think that case has to be prosecuted. Frankly, it probably could have done better and been done better last night, but I think there'll be other opportunities.”
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Groves, The Associated Press:
“Do you think there should be another debate?”
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. John Thune, (R) South Dakota:
“Well, yes, I do. I mean, I think it'd be helpful this time around had fairly low expectations set for her performance and arguably perhaps overperformed. And but I think now that the you know, sort of the they've had that first round, I think it's really important because I don't think they got enough into the substance of their differences. And I think elections are always about differences. The contrast this time around couldn't be more clear in terms of their records, their positions, their vision for the future. And I think litigating that in a debate setting would be really important. And I don't think they got enough of that done last night. So I hope there's another debate, yeah.”

STORYLINE:
Sen. John Thune, No. 2 in Senate Republican leadership, told The Associated Press that after the debate, Donald Trump needed to look for further opportunities to force Vice President Kamala Harris to "defend her record on the border and on inflation and a lot of other issues on which she has flip-flopped."
"Frankly, it probably could have been better last night, but I think there will be other opportunities," Thune said.
Thune also said there should be further debates.
