All Star but it's the cantus firmus of a 15th-century-style polyphonic mass
Missa Quelqu'un m'a dit autrefoys, written by Victoria Longstaff & performed by Onymous 3+1
Recorded in St Peter's church in Cambridge, a late-12th century building.
The Cantus firmus mass was a genre of liturgical music/style of mass composition which chiefly flourished between about 1450 and 1600 (very roughly speaking). Such masses are based around a pre-existing tune (in this case, the first 3 lines of Smash Mouth's 1999 megahit 'All Star') which typically is sung by the tenor, while the other voices sing freely-composed polyphonic material. The music in this video is set to the first part of the first movement of the mass ordinary, the Kyrie Eleison; I would do more but the ratio of All Star lyrics:polyphony is currently sitting around 15 seconds:1 minute so it would take me a while. You can follow the tune as it appears in this video by watching Steve Harwell's bouncing head (sorry I got tired of animating the bouncing head like 4 bars from the end). Yes this is basically All Star but medieval/renaissance.
Let us know what you think in the comments & maybe one day I'll write the whole mass. Link for the sheet music to come.
