🍁Concert Review by Sri. T K Ramkumar 🍁
Happy Sri Rama Navami!!
🔸To celebrate the festival today with music, we offer you a specially remastered and a unique and a phenomenal concert of Dr Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (BMK), that took place 41 years ago. He was supported on the violin by Master Nagaraj, on the mridangam by Master Praveen, and on the ghatam by Bangalore Manjunath.
👉🏽The details of the concert and its time stamp is at the end of this narration.
🔹Since then, that a lot of listening to, pondering over, and discussing about Muralīgānam has taken place is not a doubt; but that several aspects we had missed then which are evident now, only confirms there is much in Muralīgānam that can be noted with evolved listening and constant listening.
🔸My esteemed friend Sreenivasa Murthy and I, who attended this concert then, could recall vividly every aspect of the concert; but more surprisingly much more could be perceived and gathered only now on a renewed listening, at least by me.
🔹BMK has rendered a dozen compositions, probably at their best. The rāgas he has delineated are exquisitely done and they are pristine given that those rāgas never are presented usually. If a rāga was not delineated, its form was adequately shown through the impeccable rendition of the composition in that rāga.
🔸Tyagaraja is eminently portrayed in every one of his compositions in the light of the mood of the composition, to give us a glimpse of the state of the mind of the Saint composer.
🔹The necessary mental poise essential to convey a mood of deep reflection especially of a spiritual flavour, is conveyed through that rarely heard Mandāri rāga and the composition in it, in Kannada.
🔸In every one of his compositions, be it in rāga delineations or in rendition of the compositions themselves or in the svara-vinyāsam, some truly astounding dimensions of Carnatic music have been highlighted. Mention must however be made specifically of the Tōdi rāga delineation, that is truly memorable.
🔹What makes this concert unique? The rāgas taken up for detailed delineation, the compositions presented, and the svara-vinyāsam for several of them…each one is a weighty presentation. And the musical content in each item.
🔸The discerning listeners in this forum can certainly figure out many more unique aspects of this concert, and share with the rest.
