French Prime Minister Alain Juppe named a new cabinet on
Tuesday (7/11) in an attempt to reverse a disastrous slide in his
popularity and to restore market confidence. The new slim-line
cabinet, announced by presidential aide Dominique de Villepin
on the steps of the Elysee Palace, contains 32 members compared to
the previous team of 41. The new team included only three new
ministers seen as loyal to ex-premier Eduard Balladur. They were Alain Lamassoure, who takes over the budget ministry, Dominique Perben who became minister for the Civil Service, and Jean-Claude Gaudin, the Marseille mayor who became minister for regional development.
