STORYLINE
Dramatic pictures emerged on Monday of the ongoing fighting in western Libya between rebels and forces loyal to embattled leader Moammar Gadhafi.
The footage showed rebels in the town of Bir Ghanam on Saturday advancing on Gadhafi''s forces shortly after a NATO airstrike, which destroyed several Libyan army tanks.
At one point, the rebels came under fire and leaped to the ground as enemy bullets flew overhead.
Medical officials said five rebels and three regime soldiers were been killed in the fighting.
The footage showed the dead bodies of two soldiers loyal to Gadhafi lying on the ground covered by blankets and another wounded regime solider receiving treatment from a doctor in the field.
A rebel commander said opposition forces captured Bir Ghanam and moved a few miles beyond it, as well as making advances on a separate highway to Sabratha.
In Tripoli on Sunday, Libyan Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi acknowledged that rebels had entered Bir Ghanam, but were then driven out after a few hours.
Rebels are hoping for a breakthrough in the far west of Libya, frustrated with the stalemate in the centre of the country, where their underequipped forces have been unable to budge the battlelines despite five months of NATO airstrikes on Gadhafi''s military.
Rebels control most of the eastern half of country, while Gadhafi''s regime holds most of the west, centred around Tripoli, the country''s capital.
