North Korea has said it will not attend an international military sports event scheduled to be held in South Korea in October.

In a letter sent to the France-based International Military Sports Council (CISM) on Friday, North Korea's sports education committee gave notice of its decision not to attend the 2015 CISM World Games Korea, according to Seoul's Ministry of National Defense. The North did not elaborate on the reason.

The South's defense ministry has expressed regret over Pyongyang's announcement of its absence from the world's largest military sports festival. The organizing committee said it will continue to persuade the North to participate.

The games will be staged in eight municipalities of the country's North Gyeongsang Province, including Mungyeong, from October 2 to 11.
