In this episode of Checks & Balance, Saahil Murli Menghani (Twitter- @SaahilMenghani, IG- @SaahilMurliMenghani) is fact-checking India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 7 steps & with 7 hard-facts, we decode how PM Modi's defense on rising petrol & diesel prices was misleading, biased, & filled with half-truths.
In this episode, you'll see a deep-dive into Modi government's track record over the last 8 years & its comparison with what non-BJP state governments did in the same period. We also reveal the big game that the Modi government has been playing with state governments since 2017. How Modi government has reduced share of states in excise duty by a gigantic 559%. How Excise duty imposed by Modi government on you has gone up by a staggering 194% on petrol and a gigantic 585% on diesel since 2014. While tax rates by states have more or less remained constant. We also compare Modi's performance with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh whose handling of fuel pricing was fiercely attacked by Modi who was then the Gujarat Chief Minister. We find that under Manmohan, states were getting more share in excise duty than under Modi even though under Modi the burden of excise duty on you the tax payer has immensely increased. We also present concrete evidence to deduce that Modi government is squarely responsible for the massive rise in petrol & diesel prices.
