Ages ago a dark wizard, Mondain, murdered his father, stole his Sun Ruby Gem, and twisted its power against itself to forge the "Gem of Immortality" which he used to plunge ancient Sosaria into unending despair… until a Stranger from Another World came to the people's aid and cast him down. In time Sosaria would come under the noble rule of Lord British, and the land was renamed "Britannia" in his honor… but the stain of Mondain's evil was difficult to wash away, for even the shards of his gem retained some essence of his malevolence, with three coming to embody the vices of Falsehood, Hatred, and Cowardice, possessing three unjustly slain bodies and giving rise to the Shadowlords.
Now one of their dread forms, Faulinei — the Shadowlord of Falsehood — has been utterly destroyed, its shard having been cast into the Lycaeum's "Flame of Truth." Two yet remain: Astaroth, the Shadowlord of Hatred, and Nosfentor, the Shadowlord of Cowardice. The Avatar, champion of the Eight Virtues, must once more plunge into the depths of the Underworld to recover and destroy their shards so as to rid Britannia of their vile influence.
To accomplish this the Avatar has recovered the magic-negating Crown of Lord British from within the domain of the tyrannical Lord Blackthorn whom had usurped the throne when Lord British was hidden away by the Shadowlords… but it was not without cost, for brave Geoffrey of Jhelom was lost within the dungeons, his body unrecoverable; however another has come to the Avatar's aid, Gorn, a hardy warrior from the far-off world of Balema. Along with the Avatar's remaining companions — Iolo, Gwenno, Shamino, and Mariah — the Avatar must also recover Lord British's Scepter and Serpentine Amulet if the heroes seek to brave the Dungeon of Doom and rescue their sovereign.
