Ficus often develop small bumps on the trunk or branches. With time and moisture these have the potential to become aerial roots. However, should conditions become dry in their early formative stages, most of the young aerials will shrivel up and die. This is because the new early aerials do not have a mature bark that is desiccation-resistant. The early aerial roots are also fragile and break with careless or even gentle handling. One method to help them grow into the soil, is by putting plastic tubes filled with moss underneath them. This protect them from mechanical damage and desiccation and guide them into the soil.
