Zener diodes sets the voltage of a 2N3906 PNP bipolar junction transistor (BJT) wired as a current source. Using a 5.6V zener a 510 ohm emitter resistor, it sets current through the resistor, emitter to collector, and the collector side load at a little less than 10mA even as the supply voltage changes and the load changes as ling as the supply voltage is high enough to power everything.
