This is a brief clip showing a hard Maple log that I have in my log yard, This log was harvested a few years ago on my property. I left this log lying on the ground in a shaded area for the past few years. I hope that by doing this that the wood has spalted and will produce some nice figured lumber. The diameter of this log is 32 inches and the length is ten feet. I will saw this maple into 8/4 slabs on my Wood-Mizer LT35 sawmill.
If you are interested in seeing this process take place then either like this video or leave a comment below. If the interest is there for this I will take the cameras with my when I saw this log into highly figured sought after slabs. I plan on making them live edge slabs for the use of furniture making. Weather permitting I will process this log in the next few days.
For those that are not aware of the process on spalting. Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Although primarily found in dead trees, spalting can also occur under stressed tree conditions or even in living trees. Although spalting can cause weight loss and strength loss in the wood, the unique coloration and patterns of spalted wood are sought after by woodworkers.
