Is it possible to build strength without gaining weight? Without building big muscles? YES. But you must manage your volume. High intensity, low volume training is the best way to gain strength without putting on bodyweight, which is essential for weight class athletes like fighters, non-contact endurance athletes like soccer players, as well as first responders, military personnel, and law enforcement officers.
Two set and rep schemes I like for this training approach are 5x1 @ 90% and 6x2 @ 80%. You will get neurological adaptations that make you stronger without necessarily bulking up with muscle. Try it with your big lifts: squat, bench press, deadlift, military press, and power clean.
