Doeringer, who is well known for appropriating artworks from contemporary masters, reshot Warhol's 1964 classic "Empire" forty-eight years later to the day.
Both artists shot on July 25--26 from 8:06 PM to 2:42 AM. Warhol's "Empire" was recorded on 16mm film, Doeringer's on digital video. Warhol shot "Empire" from the 41st floor of the Time-Life Building in Manhattan, Doeringer shot his from the rooftop of artist Disney Nasa Borg studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
The question is, can one really be thought of as "better" than the other? Is filming the empire state building an act, in itself, that can be considered "original"?
Eric Doeringer, Empire (after Andy Warhol), 2012, digital video, unique, 8 hours.
