Magento vs WordPress
If you are looking to build an online shop, there are many online shop systems which you can choose from.
Here some possible shop systems: 1) Magento 2) WordPress or WooCommerce 3) Drupal 4) Shopify 5) Opencart.
Out of those, the most used are Magento and WordPress or the WordPress extension called WooCommerce.
So you might wonder what the better onlineshop system is for your purpose.
You need to check the following things:
* How many visitors will you be having per day?
* How many products will you have in your shop?
* Are you looking to expand your shop globally?
* How important is security?
* What is your budget?
So lets go through each question:
1) How many visitors will you have per day? : If you have only a small number of visitors per day. Let’s say 100 to a 1000 visitors. Then WordPress can be the better choice.
But if you have, lets say 1000 to 100’000 visitors per day. A WordPress Installation might break under the heavy load, which will be created by these large numbers. Then a Magento installation would be better, as they are made for large number of web visitors.
2) How many products will you have in your shop? Here it is the same pattern, as in the answer before. If it is only small number of products, WooCommerce/ WordPress will be the better choice. If it is a large number of products, then you should definitely go for Magento. To have a rough figure. Upto 1000 Products might be possible to be handled by WordPress, higher numbers should be handled by Magento.
3) Are you looking to expand globally? If you will have your shop in different languages and customized for different countries. Then a WordPress installation will not be sufficient. Magento has specific modules, which will help you and the developer team to build solutions which can be expanded on a global scale.
4) How important is security? In WordPress you would need to make a backup of the system every month or more frequently, so as to make sure, not to lose any data. WordPress can be highly susceptible to hacker attacks and can also be hacked much easier. Magento on the other side is a bit more resistant to such attacks. So if you have data on the site, which are very valuable, then go for Magento.
5) What is your budget? If you have a small budget upto 4000 US Dollar. Then WordPress should be the way to go. A web company can easily configure the onlineshop and create the necessary payment gateways. Even a custom design will be able to be made with that budget. Only if you have a higher budget than that should you go for Magento. Here projects can start with 4000 US Dollar and can go upto millions of US Dollars in spending.
So here my conclusion regarding Magento or WordPress
If you are having a small requirement, then WordPress is the better choice. If you are looking to have a very big and complex shop, then Magento will be the way to go.
