When young Lotus Flower sees an unconscious man floating in the water near the seashore, she quickly gets help for him. The man is Allen Carver, an American visiting China. Soon the two have fallen in love, and Carver promises to take her with him when he returns home. But Carver's friends discourage him from doing this, and he returns to the USA alone. Anna May was only a teenager at the time of this film. She was born in Los Angeles and had to learn Chinese at school. She went on to be successful, despite not landing a leading lady role due to racist laws preventing people of different races to be married or kiss in films. She was honored in 2022 by being placed on the reverse side of the U.S. quarter.
