No volcano has erupted yet but the extinct volcano Keilir, and the nearby lava fields of Fagradalsfjall and Þráinsskjaldarhraun are due to. We have now experienced over 2000 earthquakes felt in the capital city of Reykjavik, Iceland and more each day. This has been going on for two weeks now, the epicentre is the Reykjanes peninsula. The last time this happened, with so many earthquakes, was in 1933. The local experts and geologists are now warning of the imminent irruption of the Icelandic volcano in this area, Fagradalsfjall, possible eruption (it hasn’t erupted for 6,000 years). If it erupts, it will not be like Eyjafjallajökull - an ash cloud, but more of a Fissure volcanic eruption where the ground opens up and magma comes out creating a lot of lava. At present, no one has been evacuated as there is no need for that yet. The Blue Lagoon has now been closed - this is the first time in its history due to a possible volcanic eruption.
