The European Commission presented the European Agenda on Migration in May 2015, outlining the immediate measures that will be taken in response to the crisis situation in the Mediterranean as well as the steps to be taken in the coming years.
According to Markku Markkula, President of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), the proposals are a step to the right direction towards increased solidarity between member states.
The EU must shoulder its responsibility to address migration and its effects on Europe's regions and cities, especially in the border communities, and we therefore welcome the work of the European Commission to present these plans today. In view of the debate at the June Council, we call on EU's leaders to act quickly and to respond with comprehensive solutions for all levels of government in true European solidarity ", President Markkula said.
The local and regional authorities of Europe will outline their recommendations later this year in a CoR opinion prepared by François Decoster (FR/ALDE), chair of the Commission for Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External affairs (CIVEX), as well as in a resolution to be adopted at the July Plenary Session.
Decoster, mayor of Saint-Omer and member of Nord-Pas-de-Calais Regional Council, recalled: "The CoR has in expressed its support for effective application of the principles of solidarity and shared responsibility on many occasions. We hope that the European Agenda on Migration will become the reference for the adoption and implementation of effective migration policies".
