In this episode of Navigating Academia, Dr. Singh discusses the five biggest ethical challenges that you're going to run into across all fields in academia.
This includes:
- ethical issues in scientific research
- ethical issues in social research
- ethical issues in research methodology
- ethical issues in data mining
- ethical issues in data collection
5 Biggest Ethical Issues in Academia
1. data mining and salami articles
2. methodological manipulation (research methodology)
3. non-disclosure of conflicts of interest
4. authorship manipulation
5. social cliques
Everybody thinks that academia is objective but it's really not. The higher up we get in academia, the more research that we do, the more that we come to recognize that the concept of truth has a whole lot of statistical error in it. Academics do their best, in most cases, to be objective. At the same time, things can creep in that can significantly influence the direction of entire fields. This represents ethical dilemmas for all of us.
