Rott's pendulum consists of two coupled pendulums: an "L"-shaped one with a stationary pivot in the center of its horizontal arm and a short pendulum, pivoted at the first pendulum. The period of a cycle of the entire system about the center pivot is approximately twice that of the short pendulum. An integer ratio of the two periods makes for efficient exchange of energy between the two.
For small swings, the Rott's pendulum motion is in steady state and behave as predicted by classical mechanics (as can be seen near end of this video). However, for large swings, the system behaves chaotically and its motion cannot be predicted even if its initial conditions are known; a small disturbance during the motion could greatly alter subsequent motion. The kinetic energy which is invested in the pendulum to make it swing, eventually dissipates, primarily because of friction and to a much lesser degree, drag (air resistance), as well as transfer of energy to the supporting structure.
