What does 1 Corinthians 14:34 mean?
Jesus Says:
1 Corinthians 14:34 says, "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law." However, understanding the context of this verse is vital. When Apostle Paul wrote this letter, he was addressing specific issues occurring in the Church of Corinth, including disorderly worship.
Women's silence in churches doesn't mean women are second-class or can't participate in worshiping God. In other biblical contexts, valuable women leaders like Deborah, a judge of Israel, and Prophetess Anna, imply women's invaluable roles in God's plan. This verse mainly encourages respect for order in congregational gatherings, not a limit to women's contributions or their spiritual importance.
Let us remember the greatest commandment, as cited in Matthew 22:37-39, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." This commandment extends to all, irrespective of gender. Everyone's voice is significant to the Lord when it stems from a heart filled with love and reverence.
