I was allowed into the park before it was opened to the public. When I heard what I thought were jets flying overhead I instantly realized - there aren't any jet fighters in Costa Rica and that by standing at the base of an active volcano it was a venting. There were no reports in the newspapers of this event, but you can see clearly that the evacuations of the area that happened hours later should have happened sooner. It was one of the most exciting things ever - at one point I actually knew the eruption happened because, just like in the movies, all the howler monkeys and birds went completely silent. And a silent jungle only means danger. It was awesome!
