November 23rd, 1993, the day Milo Hanson's life changed forever. Long before social media, the mass adoption of the internet, there was still a buck that caught the attention of the world and de-crowned the longstanding Jordan Buck record that buck was shot by none other than Milo Hanson.
Milo Hansen was and is a farmer out of Biggar, Saskatchewan and lived the average farmer life. That was until he crossed paths with the world record, typical Whitetail. But the story has to start before that. Well, story has it, a school bus driver tipped off Milo that this giant deer was feeding in certain fields the year prior, and then the secret was out locally.
It was said that bow hunters and muzzle-loader hunters were all chasing the soon to be world record white tail. The deer made it through those seasons and then November 15th rolled up.For the rifle season opener, Milo assembled a hunting party that planned on trying to push and find this giant buck. That opening day, they see the deer and saw it was later bedded on posted ground. That opening weekend, they did not connect with the giant buck.
They found the buck on November 23rd. It was bedded in a smaller woodlot and they had a planned to use one pusher and three shooters. Eventually the buck ran in front of Milo Hanson, who shot the buck with his rifle in the upper rib dropping it. It was reported that Milo and his hunting crew just didn't know quite how big this buck really was.
Once word got out that the buck was shot, Milo recounts, more and more people started showing up. In fact, for eight days, the Buck's head was in the barn unlocked as people came through to check out the buck. There were times where people were showing up when they weren't even home. But it drew a crowd from all directions.
He had a friend come to score the deer and in disbelief, he roughed scored it at 214 inches. He then later had another score come up with a 214 inch measurement as well. That's when it was setting in, that he had the new world record typical whitetail.
Eventually north American Whitetail caught wind of the buck and the potential of it being the new world record, they hopped on a jet that same day flew to Saskatchewan and the next morning they arrived at the Hanson Farm. Gordon Winnington recounts seen the head and Cape of the buck on the floor of the room and knew instantly that this was well big enough to dethrone the Jordan Buck. He stated they were there for almost 12 hours that day and there was no reach of a tape measure. The cover story came out February, 1994, and it was one of the best-selling issues of all time still to this day.
Now, one of the only mild controversies of this buck was the electrical tape between the left brow tine and G2. When Milo was shooting the buck with the Winchester model, 88, a bullet had hit the tine and it started cracking significantly, but it clearly didn’t break. The tape was there just to ensure that it didn't snap.
Now let's talk about the deer itself. The buck ended up taping at 213 5/8 inches. The gross typical score tallied up to 220 inches. The main beams measured 29 inches and it had an inside spread of 21 inches. Gordon of North American Whitetail in 1995 at dinner with Milo in Dallas, Texas to told him that deer record would not last for over 10 years because of the amount of big sheds and everything else happening in the deer world. It's now almost 28 years later, the record is holding strong as ever, but the old adage that records are meant to be broken, comes to mind. The real question is when will this happen?
Is it 50 years from now? Is it 10 years from now? Or is it even this year? No one knows when this might happen, but the world will know much faster than it took for the time for word to get out about the Milo Hanson Buck.
