Russians took their traditional cakes to church on Saturday
(18/4) for mass blessing rituals on the eve of Orthodox Easter.
The cakes, or "kulichi" in Russian, are baked several days
before the festival and consist of a mixture of eggs, butter,
sugar, vanilla, sultanas, cardamom and all sprinkled with nuts
and icing sugar. This is big business and the Moscow church
authority, or patriarchate, has a string of its own bakeries
whipping up the Easter specialities.
Preparations for Easter on what the Russian Orthodox Church
calls "Great Saturday" were led by Patriarch Alexi II, the head
of the Russian Orthodox Church.

SOT Alexi in Russian: "We are ready, we have been mediators
many times. The church is always a peacemaker and the duty of
the church is always to reconcile an serve peace. That is our
obligation duty. When tensions arise, the voice of the church is
always heard and if it is necessary the church can be a mediator
today and a conciliatory force in our life."
