Laminated glass externally is often considered the safest option due to its ability to remain in place even when broken. While monolithic toughened glass is not explicitly prohibited in the UK, it is rarely chosen by clients when a comprehensive glass risk assessment is presented.
Laminated glass also offers superior acoustic performance, though it currently falls short of monolithic glass in terms of recyclability.
In the tutorial on glass materials, part of the Retrofitting Brutalism module, we explore scenarios where monolithic toughened glass can be a viable and appropriate choice for high-rise buildings.
However, the trend in the industry seems to be moving towards the use of laminated glass in external pane of glazing units.
