The first volunteer cleaner is 53-year-old plumber Julie from Great Yarmouth. After a hard day’s work, she comes home to clean for over two hours every evening. Her home is immaculate and she steam cleans her kitchen floor up to three times a day. Julie’s family stem from a Romany Gypsy heritage and their natural cleaning methods have been handed down to her.
She uses vinegar on most household objects, especially the kitchen tap. And she won’t use bleach on her toilet, opting for fresh lemon instead, so it is 'clean enough to drink from', which is something she demonstrates. Julie hopes to learn to reduce the amount of cleaning she does and at the same time help someone adopt her techniques.
Julie will help 51-year-old environmentalist, Ken. He lives in Norfolk and has a son Richard who rarely visits because of his dad’s reluctance to throw things away.
Ken really wants this experience to help him get his house in order so that his son will visit more often. Ken lives with his two dogs and his home is overrun with endless recycling projects.
The bedroom has cobwebs like spun sugar, the dining room has layers of dust from the past 20 years and his study has been used as a dog toilet. Julie will help Ken overcome his fear of vacuum cleaners and at the same time, address her obsessive cleaning.
