TYSABRI is a prescription medicine used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), to include clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. TYSABRI increases the risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). When starting and continuing treatment with TYSABRI, it is important to discuss with your doctor whether the expected benefit of TYSABRI is enough to outweigh this risk.
It is not known if TYSABRI is safe and effective in children under 18 years of age.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
TYSABRI increases your risk of getting a rare brain infection – called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) – that usually leads to death or severe disability. You can only get PML if you have been infected with the John Cunningham Virus
(JCV). Do not take certain medications that weaken your immune system while taking TYSABRI. Even with TYSABRI alone, you can still get PML.
“When I was first diagnosed 17 years ago, there were only a few medications to choose from. I spent my first 4 years with MS doing whatever my doctor told me. When I learned that there’s an MS specialist that was near me and I went and just had the best conversations about finding something that can slow the progression. TYSABRI wasn’t something I had ever talked with anyone about. I really felt that it was the right thing for me. I learned to always do my research, always talk to other patients, always have just the best conversation with my doctor that I can have. I had to start to fight, and being an advocate for myself is the most important thing. I can’t say that enough.”
