Why would you paint a snail red? So you can see it in the dark – which is very important when you’re reintroducing to the wild a nocturnal species that had been wiped out 30 years ago…
These tropical Partula snails are extinct in the wild, but UK and U.S. zoos have bred them to be returned to their French Polynesian island homes, almost 30 years after they were wiped out. It’s the largest wildlife reintroduction in history.
Each one is marked with red UV reflective paint. That means they glow under UV torchlight, so conservationists can keep an eye on them at night.
