Julian the Second, called the Apostate by Christians, and the Philosopher by Pagans, was the last Pagan ruler of Rome. Famed as “Templum restaurator”, he was a protector of ancient traditions and an advocate for a multi faith religious empire. His discipline, wisdom and commitment made him popular among soldiers and citizens alike and many praised him for his honourable character. Some even saw him as a new Marcus Aurelius. He was a clever student of classical philosophy and valued moral behaviour above everything else. No wonder that he captivated so many imaginations for the last 600 hundred years, making him the most fascinating emperor of the Late Roman Empire.
