If we leave the property, make noise, or turn on lights, the police could come for us. Planes are grounded, flight paths are diverted, all roads and businesses are shut down. All these rules make it sound like we're in an episode of The Last of Us, but in actuality, this is a deeply spiritual time! This is Nyepi: the Balinese New Year and the biggest celebration in all of Bali! It starts a few days before with a purification ceremony. Then, on New Years Eve, the Ogoh Ogoh Parade where bad spirits are exorcised into the hand crafted monsters and at the end of the night the statues are burned! (we celebrated at the one in Ubud outside Ubud Palace)
At 6am the next morning, the 24 hour lockdown begins.
There are two reasons for this:
1. Legend has it that we are tricking Demons, summoning them with the Ogah Ogah parade, and by the time they make it to the island today, the island will appear totally abandoned.
2. It is a day to reset for the new year, focusing on your inner self.
While tourists aren’t expected to follow all of the practices, we decided to spend the day off of technology meditating, doing yoga, reading, napping, and of course star gazing. Spending a day relaxing without technology felt so good!
We are so grateful to have gotten to celebrate this very special holiday here in Bali! There are many more Bali adventures to come!
