Catching sleeper trains are always a fun way to commute, I mean who doesn’t want a bed on their train ride, am I right?! ⇩⇩Click ‘show more’⇩⇩
In this video, we caught our train from Plovdiv, Bulgaria to Istanbul, turkey (8 hours train ride). We booked a first-class sleeper train ($32 USD each) which meant that we would each get our own bed, a fridge, place to hang our jackets, sink, mirror and a heater. The cabin itself was very spacious, making the ride all the more enjoyable.
We had two immigration stops. The first one being Bulgaria, which took a matter of 40 minutes. You do not leave the train for this stop as the border control will collect your passports and return them to you. About 10-20 minutes later we arrived at the Kapikule, Turkey border, and this is where you have to exit the train to line up for immigration. This took a total of 30 minutes and went surprisingly well for us. No questions were asked, although we had our documents prepared just in case. Our mobile data worked here, but I would recommend that you don’t rely on this. There is no wifi on board the train or at the borders. Our train for some reason took 1 hour and a half at the Turkey border. We arrived in Istanbul at the Halkali train station at 5:30 am. After this 8-hour train ride, we were very tired.
Most important things to note when you arrive: The train station is far from Istanbul city centre and there is no ATM. So you will either need Euros to exchange or have some Turkish Lira on you to board another train (Marmaray) to the city centre. The transport card - Istanbul kart will cost 10 Lira - $1.64 USD.
