Legendary newsreader Brian Henderson has been farewelled at a small private funeral, after passing away earlier this month.

Henderson was Australia's longest serving news presenter, fronting Channel 9's 6pm bulletin in Sydney from 1957 until his retirement in 2002.

He was farewelled at a small private funeral this week, with attendance capped due to the state's lockdown.

He was 89.
