After years of delay, the Afghanistan government has recently said that they are ready to begin work on a $10 billion TAPI gas pipeline – running through Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.
First proposed in 1995, TAPI spans around 1,800 kilometers and aims to transport up to 33 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas annually, but has a troubled timeline.
So, Why is Afghanistan now interested in building this pipeline?
Afghanistan’s economy is extremely fragile, heavily dependent on aid, and since Taliban take-over it has only worsened.
Taliban feels the pipeline would help their battered economy by creating 12,000 jobs for Afghan people.
Afghanistan is also set to benefit from transit fees estimated at $500 million annually.
But, what about other countries?
Turkmenistan will get a new market, while India and Pakistan will get a new source of natural gas.
