Hundreds of protesters clashed with Kolkata Police on Tuesday as they marched towards the West Bengal secretariat, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. The ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ rally, organized by the student organization Paschimbanga Chattro Samaj, began at College Square in Kolkata, with participants raising slogans as they moved towards the secretariat. They clashed with police personnel and broke through barricades at Santragachi in Howrah. Protesters also climbed on top of barricades and clashed with police officers. The Kolkata Police, which had deployed heavy forces to control the protest, resorted to baton charges and tear gas shelling to disperse the crowd. A few of the protesters were also detained by the local police. Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress has stated that the rally is illegal and an attempt to incite widespread unrest in Kolkata. The state police have also termed the protest march “unauthorized,” citing concerns over potential violence and public disorder. However, the BJP, the main opposition party in the state, has accused the Chief Minister of shielding the culprits in the RG Kar case. The saffron party has called Banerjee a fascist and demanded the resignation of both the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the Chief Minister over the delay in addressing the rape and murder case of the trainee doctor.
