Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heart rhythm that can cause blood clots and eventually strokes. Although blood thinners are effective in preventing strokes, they often have limitations and side effects, such as bleeding. By removing a small pouch on the heart called the left atrial appendage, surgeons around the world have managed to reduce the chances of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation that had heart surgery for a different reason.
