STORYLINE:
Thousands of off-duty police officers and firefighters packed New York's Times Square on Thursday to demand better pay in the wake of the massive recovery effort at the World Trade Center.
Demonstrators turned out in force for the "rally for heroes," organised by the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association (PBA) and the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA).
Many chanted slogans or carried placards demanding higher salaries and criticising the government for failing to reward police officers and firefighters after heaping praise on them following September 11.
A stage was set up at 42nd Street and Broadway for appearances by union officials, celebrities and politicians, including New York senator Hillary Clinton, who spoke of the sacrifices made on September 11.
The officers and firefighters in New York are angry that they earn substantially less than many of their colleagues in other US states.
PBA spokesman Al O'Leary said police officers had also been upset over recent reports that a state arbitration panel might agree to a new two-year working contract for some officers, that could include an increase in work days.
Reports said the contract would also include annual 5 percent raises. But the PBA wants a 23 percent pay hike over two years. O'Leary added that many officers had been refused permission to take a day's holiday to attend the rally.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said some requests had to be turned down over concerns of maintaining an adequate police force.
