The banknote protected by a watermark in the form of a portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Security thread is located in the centre of the bill. The dominant color of the banknote — blue, dark blue and purple.
In may 2011, Bank Negara Malaysia has announced that it will present a new series of banknotes, replacing the existing design which was in circulation about 15 years. Banknote of 50 MYR from the new series already went into circulation on 15 July 2009. Design the rest of the new banknotes was presented on 21 December 2011 and it is expected that they will be put into circulation in the second half of 2012. Banknotes of the new series will circulate alongside the existing. The banknote series currently used will be gradually eliminated. Denominations of all banknotes of the new series will retain the portrait of the Prime Minister of Malaysia Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
