While performing maintenance on a potato harvester, a farm worker fell, and his leg was caught and crushed. This educational video tells the story of this workplace incident through animation and photos from the incident site.
Potato harvesters are one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment on a farm. Most injuries caused by potato harvesters happen when workers fall into the harvester from above during maintenance or get pulled into the harvester from the side or bottom during normal operation.
This incident investigation slide show provides agricultural workers and employers in British Columbia with a valuable health and safety training tool. It reminds employers of their responsibility to provide adequate training and supervision and a health and safety program, and to ensure equipment has effective safeguards. It also reminds workers in B.C. to speak up if they feel they have not been adequately trained to perform their work.
