During the LA riots, tens of thousands of people stormed the streets in a frenzy of looting and vandalizing. Left and right, businesses were being burned to the ground. Some store owners in Koreatown realized that if they didn't act quick, their livelihoods would certainly be destroyed. All of them armed themselves with weapons in order to defend their businesses, and many were engaged in actual gunfights. The bravery of these store owners were widely publicized in news and media. On the internet, they are known as the "Roof Koreans".
