Functional Harmony is great and all, but it seems to rely a lot on the specific shape of the major scale. So if we're not playing in major, what does that mean for chord functions? Well, that depends how strict you want to be! It gets more ambiguous, and the answers become a lot more context-dependent, but there's still a lot of value to be gained from the ideas if you're willing to cheat a little bit with your definitions. It requires some good judgment, and it's not all clear-cut and obvious anymore, but functional harmony is one of our most powerful frameworks for understanding most music, and it's not going down without a fight.
