Birth centres are units run by midwives where women can choose to give birth. Consultant midwife Pauline Cooke explains how alongside birth centres are located on the same site as a hospital, whereas free-standing birth centres are located away from the hospital out in the community. During labour, if you or the baby requires additional support you can be transferred to the hospital from the birth centre. If you are in a freestanding birth centre this is likely to be by ambulance whereas if you are in an alongside unit you can go on a trolley, in a wheelchair or on foot.
