Pongal is a festival celebrated by Tamils living around the world.We are very proud to present this video to show how this culture people respected and showed gratitude to Sun, rain, earth and the cattle used for ploughing the fields.This is a 4 day festival celebrated in the southern part of India.

First day being called as “Bhogi” falling on the last day of tamil month Margazhi.Usually people clean their house and farmers clean their land preparing for the festival.During this day old things are put into the bonfire made with cow dung and wood pieces.It also denote leaving all the bad things and starting fresh for self transformation.

Second day is Thai Pongal falling on the first day of Tamil month Thai.We know all the living being in this earth is made of solar power, to show our gratitude to sun we celebrate by keeping sweet pongal\Sakarai pongal in the open area with earthen pot and say pongalo pongal.Then poojai is done as a respect to sun.During this time the farmers harvest sugarcanes and it is kept to thank sun for the good yield.This is celebrated like the birth of sun and the way of welcoming summer.

Third day is Mattu Pongal, this day all the cattle"s are given respect for ploughing fields and also for giving milk.Tamil people consider cows as goddess Mahalakshmi and pay respect to it.So on this day cattle’s are given bath and decorated with different colours and garlands.Poojai is done for them and are welcomed by giving food.In Places like Tanjavore, Madurai , Trichy they conduct “Jallikattu” Bullfight.And is known as Veera Vilayatu by Tamils.

Fourth Day is Kaanum Pongal, during this day we visit our relatives and friends and enjoy the festival by spending time with them and sharing their favourite foods.

This is the tradition followed in celebrating the festival, by showing our gratitude to all the beings helping us and to create good bonding with them.Let us keep passing this tradition to our future generations and make them feel thankful to this universe for this life.
