STORYLINE:
Workers put the finishing touches to Moscow's main Christmas tree on Wednesday.
It is hoped the tree will draw festive crowds to the heart of the Kremlin, Cathedral Square.
According to Russia's Itar-Tass agency, the tree is about 33 metres (108 feet) high and 109 years old.
On Wednesday evening hundreds of Russian Catholics celebrated the birthday of Jesus Christ at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception.
One parishioner, Veronika, said how important the Christmas holiday was to Catholics adding that she was hoping for "better" in the coming year.
After the mass church goers were then treated to a fireworks display outside the cathedral.
Catholics account for a small proportion of the Russian population, the majority belonging to the Orthodox Church which observes Christmas on January 7.
