Onam' (Malayalam: ഓണം) is an annual Harvest festival in the Kerala state of India, celebrated on the twenty second nakshatra Thiruvonam in the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam. According to legends, the festival is to commemorate the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Vamana and Mahabali (Mahābalī / Bali / Māveli, a daitya king found in Hindu mythology), who is believed to visit Kerala during Onam. He is a benevolent and generous King, who ruled without discrimination. His revisit marks the festival of Onam, as a reminder of the virtuous rule of Mahabali. Onam is a celebrated as a cultural festival with numerous festivities such as Athachamayam, Vallamkali, Pulikali, Pookkalam, Onathappan (Vamanan), Onapottan (Maveli), Onasadya, Onakkodi, Onam Kali, Thumbithullal, Kummattikali, Onathallu, Onavillu, Kazhchakkula, Thiruvonathoni etc. The Onam celebrations mark the Malayalam New Year, which spread over twelve days of Chingam month- Atham, Chithira, Chothi, Visakham, Anizham, Thrikketta, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradam, Thiruvonam, Avittam and Chathayam.
'Vallam kali' (Snake boat race), a traditional boat race in Kerala is a form of canoe racing, uses paddled war canoes, mainly conducted during Onam, which includes races of many kinds of paddled longboats and snake boats (Palliyodams). Other types of boats are churulan vallam, iruttukuthy vallam, odi vallam, veppu vallam, vadakkanody vallam and kochu vallam. 'Vanchipattu' (Boat song) is the form of poetry in Malayalam used during Vallam kali and related rituals. Ramapurathu Warrier is the pioneer of vanchipattu. Some of the major boat races are- Aranmula Uthrattathi, Nehru Trophy, Champakkulam Moolam, Kumarakom etc.
'Aranmula Vallam Kali', the oldest river boat race in Kerala takes place at Aranmula, near Sri Parthasarathi Temple of Lord Krishna and Arjuna, Pathanamthitta. The boat races became the part of the temple festival since 1972. More than 50 Palliyodams (Aranmula’s unique snake boats / Chundan Vallam) move in pairs to the rhythm of Vanchippattu sung by the oarsmen inside it. Each one will usually have four helmsmen, rowers and singers. It is decorated with ornamental umbrellas, golden lace, flag etc. The oarsmen wearing white mundu and turbans singing Vanchippattu (Vallappattu) are welcomed by thalappoli. Aranmula temple celebrations begin with the arrival of Thiruvonathoni (a special boat with the necessary provisions and an ever-burning lamp, set off its journey from the temple at Kattoor). Aranmula 'Vallasadya' (banquet), is a ritual offering to the temple's deity and is considered one of the world's most prominent food festivals. The feast with up to 70 unique dishes, held on the Ashtamirohini (birthday of Lord Krishna) of Chingam, is a vital part of the 72 day long Onam festivities, served to the people at the temple premises during July- September (Malayalam months: Karkidakam- Kanni).
