The alternator on the E-Class may be easy to access.
But to remove the alternator you need to first remove a number of trim parts and components.
Disconnect the battery.
Remove the engine cover, the intake air ducts, the cold air intake and the center piece of the front end reinforcement.
Remove the underbody engine compartment paneling and the fan unit located behind it.
To do so, unclip the lower air ducting and undo the bolt on the right-hand side.
On the left side of the vehicle, unplug the connector for the fan unit.
Detach the lines on the fan module.
Do so by cutting through the cable ties.
Back on top, unclip the plastic trim.
Don't forget the plastic clip on the side.
Remove the bracket from the water hose.
Pull out the fan unit.
You can now access the poly-V belt.
Open the tensioner pulley and remove the belt.
Replace the poly-V belt if it is worn.
The alternator and the 4 mounting bolts are now visible.
Two of these bolts are accessible from the top side of the engine.
Unplug the electrical connector from the alternator regulator.
The two other bolts are located on the bottom side.
First unscrew the bracket from the alternator.
You will now be able to see the bolts.
Remove the bolts.
Unscrew the electrical line B+.
The alternator is now detached.
Reach down from above and carefully maneuver the alternator up and out of the engine compartment.
The regulator is located below the cover piece.
Remove the three screws shown here.
Remove the four screws holding the regulator in place.
After installing the new alternator, perform a function test.
