(13 Feb 2020) The Iraqi government has given NATO the greenlight to stay in the country for training purposes, the organisation's Secretary General said on Thursday
Jens Stoltenberg's announcement comes weeks after Iraq demanded that foreign forces leave over the U.S. killing of Iran's top general at Baghdad airport.
He also said NATO "supported strongly " peace talks between the US and the Taliban and hoped they would create conditions for inter-Afghan talks.
Stoltenberg added that NATO had "no intention" of deploying land based nuclear weapons in Europe following the demise of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) but it had to "make sure" it had a credible deterrent.
NATO remains committed to preventing a new arms race and will continue to work for arms control, Stoltenberg added.
