Every year, National Fire Services Week (NSW) is observed from 14th to 20th of April as a tribute to the 71 brave firefighters who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, fighting the massive fire at Mumbai dockyard on 14th April 1944. But unfortunately, even after eight decades, the fire risk in Mumbai has not yet subsided.
In the last five years, Mumbai has witnessed more than 26000 fire incidents, exposing the risk and vulnerabilities of city infrastructure to fire hazards. Lack of a proper rescue plan and timely regulatory oversight handicaps fire safety agencies in times of a crisis. Lack of awareness is also a significant problem leading to disastrous fires in Mumbai. Most people are not concerned about the fire safety measures of their buildings as much as they are about the availability of lifts, parking spaces etc.
There is a need to adopt a systematic approach toward fire safety and reducing infrastructure vulnerabilities in Mumbai. In this regard, Mumbai First is organizing this panel to discuss the risk and vulnerabilities of Mumbai city from fire hazards and strengthen its fire safety mechanisms.
The aim is to take collective responsibility and work towards an action plan that involves citizens, housing societies, builders, and the MCGM to recognize the risks and act promptly. In the process, we can achieve greater awareness and cooperation of citizens for improving the fire safety measures and eliminating the risk of Mumbai transitioning from the financial to the fire capital of India.
