In this video, we learned that a British paratrooper holding a chicken in the movie A Bridge Too Far is based on a real person named Lieutenant Joseph Glover and his pet chicken Myrtle. Glover liberated Myrtle from a farm as part of a bet and she made several non-combat drops with the paratroopers in 1944. During the Arnhem operation, Glover and Myrtle parachuted into the area with the 4th parachute brigade. However, Myrtle was found dead the next day and was buried with parachute wings. The portrayal in the film is different from what actually happened, but the chicken detail is based on a true story from World War II.
