Early morning every Sunday, the streets in Sapa town are filled with hundreds of Hmong and Red Dao people in colourful ethnic attire heading to Sapa market.
Sapa market is located close to the lake to the north end of Sapa town. Based in an extremely spacious building, there are few stalls during the week with the main market is organised every Sunday.
The traditional market, which starts early and bustles until early afternoon, is not only for trading, but also for socialising.
The market has designated zones for the buying and selling of textiles, fruits and vegetables, meats, toys, clothing and cooked food. By far the most interesting aspect of Sapa market is observing the trading of traditional crafted items such as knives, baskets and textiles. Made with great artisanal skills learnt and honed over many years is extraordinary.
