Initiative 900, approved by Washington voters in 2005 and enacted into state law in 2006, authorized the State Auditor’s Office (SAO) to conduct independent, comprehensive performance audits of state and local governments.
Specifically, the law directs SAO to “review and analyze the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of the policies, management, fiscal affairs, and operations of state and local governments, agencies, programs, and accounts.”
In October 2023, SAO published a legislatively-mandated performance audit of Medicaid and Managed Care Organizations reviewing their efforts to ensure program integrity and maintain accurate encounter data. In November 2023, SAO published a legislatively-mandated performance audit of K-12 Education During and After the Pandemic to assess what opportunities there may be to learn from changes made in K-12 educational methods.
In late November 2023, SAO presented a review and analysis of both of these audits in front of the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee (JLARC). This is a video of that presentation, courtesy of TVW.
