The Hospitallers originated in the 11th century during the Crusades. Initially focusing on providing protection to pilgrims, they evolved into a military order dedicated to defending Christian interests in the Holy Land. After the fall of Jerusalem, they relocated to Cyprus, then to Rhodes, and finally settled on Malta in the 16th century. Renowned for their valor in battle and humanitarian efforts, they remained a significant force until the Napoleonic Wars. Today, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta continues their humanitarian work worldwide.
